– So, what should a perfect website builder be able to do? Give you limitless options to edit, give you a lot of templates to choose from, be easy to use, and be free? My name is Chase Edmondson and today we’re going to go through one of the most well-known website builders, Wix. The first thing about Wix, it’s very universal. You probably heard of other website builders which specialize in a particular website niche, such as photography website builder, eCommerce website builder, or even a website builder for musicians. But Wix, well, Wix claims to cover all the niches. Yet, when you try to please everyone,
You often please no one. Is it the same with Wix? To start building a website, you just need to register, or just log in with your Google account. Now, you will be faced with a trial of three unimaginable riddles: What your website will be? A blog, a portfolio, or a business site? What extra features will you need? Video player, blog registration forms, etc.?
And how you will build your website? The first two options are self-explanatory, but this last step can be split into two paths. Either using Wix Editor, or Wix ADI. In simple terms, the Editor allows you to have full control over everything in your design. ADI is a quick way to build a website
Using the help of a few smart features. It’s called ADI, or Artificial Design Intelligence, because the world is not already filled with acronyms for freaking everything. First, let’s see how our fellow robots are doing. ADI works by further asking you a few questions about what you need on your site. Then it comes up with three similar but modern-looking designs to choose from. After that, well, you can just publish a website since you already have everything you need.
But if you want to tweak things, you can go and edit your design further. The main difference in these builder modes is how much control they give you. ADI doesn’t allow you to add individual elements to a page, you can only add fully-structured pages or blocks to those pages.
It’s for a good reason. You don’t want to scare a new user with 10,000 choices on the first page. Imagine this mode as building a house with already constructed rooms to that house. You add one floor on top of the other and don’t really mess with small details. Wix Editor is the real Wix deal. As you could have guessed, it’s more complicated and has fewer restrictions when it comes to your designs. When you first start with the Editor, you will choose a template. It will work as a base to manipulate and complete your project.
Two good things I can say from the very start: you have a response drag-and-drop control scheme. (lips smacking) Love that. And there are barely any restrictions on elements or things you can do in the free version. The controls are smooth. You get rulers and boundary markers
So you can visually track how your design will look and where you’re placing elements. And there’s barely any limitation to your designs. If you want, you can just drag elements of the screen and your website will still work fine. You also can activate Dev Mode,
Which lets you see and customize various code elements throughout your website. Now, since there’s a lot of features and settings in this mode, you can get stuck or lost sometimes. So there will be a bit of a learning curve, but nothing you can’t handle. On the design front, Wix is on top of its game. You can create a lot of unique designs, or just sit back and let Wix do most of the job. It’s a universal builder, both for designers and newbies. If you’re new to website building, go with Wix ADI.
And if you have experience, Wix editor will do the trick. Wix offers quite a selection of plans, eight in total, ranging from free to $49 a month. These are further divided for simple business websites and for eCommerce. But before we throw money at it, let’s see what you get with the free plan. Obviously, the free plan is bad for any business
Or professional website. However, it is amazing if you want to test designs, do school projects, or other non-serious web things. The free plan has two downsides: limitations and ads. Your website will display multiple ads that this was made with Wix. And you will have to use a Wix-specific subdomain.
You also only get 500 megabytes of storage space and 500 megabytes of bandwidth. So, it’s not quite enough for a serious project, but fine if you want to play around. All of the premium plans allow you to use a custom domain and add a free SSL certificate. But not all of them will remove those pesky ads. If you’re from Europe, you get additional, even cheaper Connect Domain plan that only allows you to connect to Custom Domain.
Oh, and it slightly increases bandwidth limitation. But paying around $6 a month and having Wix ads all over the place is a bit counterproductive. If you’re not running an eCommerce store, go with the combo plan for around $14 a month. It removes all ads and gives you everything you need
For a complete website. The eCommerce plans are best for online shops. Duh. They start from $23 a month and get all that you need to sell online. Overall, while I have some problems with Wix pricing, you will get a lot from both free and premiums plans. You get what you pay for,
Hosting and a great website builder. Naturally, if you want your site to be ranked first in Google search results, website builders are not the best choice. Wix is not that bad when it comes to SEO, however. For new users, you get an SEO plan to guide you. You also can add custom URLs for redirects,
Edit your Robot.txt, and change page metadata. So, if you do everything right, it should make you visible on the map. I created a few websites on Wix’s free plan and tested them with the GTmetrix Speed Analyzer. The results? Well, look at this. The time before the first byte or the time it took for the server to start loading your website, was just 121 milliseconds.
And it loaded most of the elements in under one second. This means that while your website is not fully loaded, users can interact with it. But if you look closer, it took about six seconds to fully load all of the content. So Wix is fast even on the free plan,
But it can take a while for everything to fully load. Wix website builder is a versatile and extensive tool that will surprise a lot of users.
