DKIM explains – how it works | Mailtrap

Hi, we are Mailtrap and today we will tell you about how DKIM works. DKIM stands for DomainKeys Identified Mail. It is a protocol for email authentication to prevent spoofing and phishing. DKIM signature mechanism signs outbound email messages from a sending domain with a private key.
The corresponding public key is published in the DNS records. The receiving mail server retrieves the public DKIM key to confirm the message headers and body were not altered on the way. Use the keys provided by your mail provider. When you send an email the DKIM email security magic begins.
The sending server creates a DKIM signature – a body and headers of your message hashed with your private key. Within seconds the message arrives to the receiving server. Now the receiving mail server has to check that the mail message wasn’t meddled with in transit.
The receiving server runs DNS query to the sending server and retrieves the public key. With the newly acquired public key, the receiving server builds its own hashes and compares them with the ones received in the message. Authentication failed.
If the keys don’t match (for example, the message body was changed on the way), authentication fails. And the chances are high that the email message will go to a spam folder, or will be rejected right away. Authentication passed. If the keys and signatures match, voila!
The message is more likely to reach your inbox. Here’s an example of how of a passed DKIM test in your real email message looks like. Stay tuned and learn more on email infrastructure with the Mailtrap channel!
