Understanding the Difference Between Add-On Domains and Your Primary Domain
Welcome to another episode of How To Webmaster! My name is Leon, and today let’s delve into the distinction between an add-on domain and your primary domain in your hosting account.
When you sign up for a hosting account, you are assigned a primary domain name. For instance, in this example, my primary domain is article spinner reviews.com. When you log into your cPanel, you’ll notice a section for add-on domains. In my case, it shows that I am using 0 out of 5 add-on domains. But what exactly are add-on domains?
Understanding Add-On Domains
When you first purchase web hosting, such as Hostgator’s shared web hosting plans, you’ll notice that there are different plans available. For example, the Hatchling plan allows for a single domain, while the Baby plan offers unlimited domains. This means that with the Baby plan, you can host multiple domains or websites by using add-on domains. This allows you to expand beyond just hosting a single domain with your hosting account.
Adding an Add-On Domain to Your Account
If you have a hosting plan that allows for add-on domains, like my account which allows for a maximum of 5 add-on domains, you can easily add a new domain. To do this, go to the “Domains” section in your cPanel and click on “Add-On Domains.”
Registering a New Domain
Before you can add on a new domain, you first need to register the domain through a domain registration company like GoDaddy or Namecheap. Once you have acquired the domain, you can enter it in the “Add-On Domains” section. This process will also create a subdomain and a document root folder for your new domain. You can also choose to create an FTP account for this domain, but it is not necessary as you can use your main cPanel FTP account.
Completing the Add-On Domain Setup
Once you have entered the new domain and completed the setup, your add-on domain will be created. You can then find the folder for your add-on domain in the file manager, where you can begin adding your website files. You can also use app installers like Softaculous to install applications like WordPress on your add-on domain.
Installing WordPress on Your Add-On Domain
If you choose to install WordPress on your add-on domain, you can do so through the app installer. Simply select your add-on domain as the installation URL and proceed with the installation process. Once WordPress is installed, your add-on domain folder will be populated with WordPress files.
Accessing Your Add-On Domain
After installing WordPress on your add-on domain, you can access your website by entering the domain name in your browser. In my example, I used the domain “myaddondomain.com” to demonstrate the process.
Conclusion
I hope this tutorial has helped you understand the concept of add-on domains and how they can expand the capabilities of your hosting account.
