How to install a free SSL security certificate on your WordPress website with Cloudflare

Tutorial Hosting
Hi i’m yaz from brainstorm force and today i’m going to be showing you how to change your wordpress website from not secure to secure by installing an ssl certificate it only takes a few simple steps to install and put away your wallet because i’m going to be showing you how to do it

For absolutely free if you’re new to the channel we create wordpress tutorials for beginners and non-coders so if you want to improve your wordpress capabilities then make sure you subscribe down below and turn on notifications and in this tutorial we’ll be using cloudflare to install a free ssl certificate on your wordpress

Website to get rid of that not secure message this method will be perfect for websites like blogs or personal websites that won’t be collecting personal information or payment details from your visitors but if your website is for a medium to large business like an e-commerce store then you’re most likely going to be

Collecting payment details addresses and more in this case i’d recommend you check out one of the paid ssl options we’ll be exploring the different types of ssl in upcoming videos if you don’t want to miss out on that make sure you subscribe i’ll be starting this video off by giving you a short

Explanation about what the not secure message means and why it’s important to have a website secured by ssl but if you want to jump straight into the tutorial you can do that by clicking on the timestamp below so what does not secure actually mean simply put the connection between your website and

Its visitors is not protected and whatever information that gets exchanged between the two has a potential to be compromised and stolen for example if you own an e-commerce store you’ll be collecting customer information like credit card details addresses and more and if your website was not secure a hacker could intercept this information

Leaving customers furious with a massive loss of trust and you could even be liable to pay for the damages we definitely want to avoid that and if you were a customer would you enter your private information onto a website that said it was not secure no don’t like that exactly i wouldn’t either

And not only that google itself has said publicly that their algorithm does favor secure websites over ones that are not so this means that if you leave your website not secure you could face disadvantages in terms of your google search ranking meaning that your website is less

Discoverable you can avoid all of this by making your website secure and to do that you have to install an ssl certificate now i know what you’re thinking and an ssl certificate is not the same kind of certificate you get for doing well in school

Or for finishing a course no but an ssl certificate is used to certify that there is a layer of security for the connection between your website and the visitor’s web browser this layer of security is called an ssl ssl works kind of like a secret language between your website and the visitor

Nobody else can see or understand the information that’s exchanged between them pretty cool huh you can tell when a website is secured with an ssl certificate when the not secure message is replaced by little padlock like you can see here clicking on it will tell your website’s visitor that the

Connection to your site is secure you can even tell from the url because it will show https in front of your domain name rather than http and you can probably guess what the s stands for right that’s right it’s subscribe down below no i’m just kidding this

Actually stands for secure so good job if you got that right and as i mentioned before in this tutorial i’ll be showing you how to install a free ssl certificate for your website using cloudflare they make it very easy to set up your ssl certificate on your website in only

A matter of steps ssl certificates are usually valid for a maximum of one year before you’ll need to have it renewed the cloudflare will also renew it for you automatically making it a great option for beginner level users list encrypt is another great free option and is probably the most popular

Option out there however compared to the cloudflare method it is a little bit more technical to set up especially for beginner level users you can also get an ssl certificate through your own web host and sometimes it’s as easy as a click of a button but depending on which web host you’re with

You might have to pay for it separately on top of your existing hosting plan it’s really up to you which option you choose i’d recommend cloudflare especially if you’re a beginner level user okay that’s all i need to teach you about ssl and why it’s important

Now we’re going to jump on the computer for the tutorial and i’m going to show you step by step how you can install an ssl certificate for free all right before we get started i’m just going to quickly show you the website that we’ll be installing our ssl certificate on

As you can see here it currently shows a not secure message and that the connection to the website is not secure we’ll be changing that in a little bit and we’ll be adding that padlock icon and making this website secure with an ssl certificate if you’re wondering what this website is

This is a fresh install of wordpress that i’ve just done and all i’ve done is installed the astra theme on it astra is a wonderful theme and it’s made by brainstorm force and what’s cool is it comes with all these amazing beautiful starter templates that are pre-built and you can install

At a click of a button just like this amazing pizzeria one it looks beautiful has all these different features and yeah i’m gonna stop looking at it because all the pizza is making me hungry but if you’re interested in checking out astra i’ll leave a link in the description below

Okay now that we know what the website looks like we’re gonna go ahead and jump onto cloudflare.com and this is what cloudflare looks like and because of its user friendly interface it’s extremely popular amongst wordpress users and first we’re just going to go ahead and sign up by pressing the sign up

Button over here you already have an account you can go ahead and log in and this is what the signup page looks like we’re just going to go ahead and enter our email address and password and once you’re ready we’re going to press the blue button over here create account

And once your signup process is completed you’ll arrive at this page where you’ll be entering the domain name of the website that you want to install your ssl certificate on so i’m just going to go ahead and enter the name of the website that we cut we just checked out before

Just like that and i’m going to press the blue add site button and then it will take you onto a page where you can see the different plans offered by cloudflare and as you can see they do have some paid plan options one at twenty dollars a month

Two hundred dollars a month or you can even get in touch with enterprise options all these offer are just advanced security methods depending on your various needs if you’re a bigger company or if you need more security for your website but for most beginner level users and for the purpose of this tutorial

The free plan will be more than enough we can go down here and press on the free plan here just like that and press the blue continue button now it’s going to go ahead and do a quick scan of our dns records of our website and they will show you all your dns

Records right here you can go ahead and confirm or verify the ip addresses over here to see if it matches the ones on your domain registrar but all i’m going to do is just going to go down here and press the blue continue button and on this page you can see that

They’ve provided a few different steps on changing your name servers to the ones provided by cloudflare it might seem a little bit intimidating but don’t worry i’m going to walk you through it step by step the first step involves checking to see where your domain is actually registered

If you own your domain you probably know exactly where that is my domain is registered on google domains which i’ll show you in a little bit and once we log into our domain register we’re going to remove existing name servers as you can see here mine currently point to siteground

If you’re wondering what name servers are name servers are sorted like the address book of the internet it helps your web browser understand where your website is and helps locate it so we’re going to be changing the ones that are currently entered like my ones from siteground over here

And we’re going to be changing that to the ones specified by cloudflare too over here now i’m going to go into google domains which is where my domain is registered this is what google domains looks like this is the domain register i personally prefer if you want to find out why that is

We’ve created a review of google domains and you can check that out in the description below or you can click on the top right of your screen right now and don’t worry this step will work with any other domain register doesn’t have to be google domains okay so i’m going to quickly pick

The domain that we’re working on which is bsf.com right here and what you have to find is the dns settings associated with that domain which is right here i’m going to click that and that should load up all my dns settings and the setting you’re looking for is name servers

As i showed you before my current name servers point to siteground as you can see with these two here and we’re going to be changing those to the ones specified by cloudflare i’m going to press the edit button down here and we’re going to go back to cloudflare and cloudflow makes it

Really easy to copy their nameservers just press this button here click to copy and that’s copied to our clipboard now we can go back to our domain registrar and we can replace this first one here with the one we just copied from cloudflare like so then we can go back onto cloudflare once

Again copy the second one and paste it on the second slot here and when that’s done just press the blue save button right here and at the top you’ll see that the changes csbc.com will take effect in the next 48 hours and that’s pretty normal

That’s all we have to do on our domain register we can go ahead and close that now now back on cloudflare we can go ahead and press done check name servers at the bottom the big blue button and it will show you a little bit of a

Quick start guide but we can just press finish later at the bottom here this will take you into your cloudflare dashboard and because our name servers haven’t changed over just yet it does take a little while for that to take effect as we saw with the warning before

It’ll still show you the steps that we saw before but down at the bottom here you can see that there’s a button that says check name servers it even tells you that cloudflare does check the name servers for updates we can press this button and it will give you an update itself

It tells us this cloudflare is checking the name servers and please wait a few hours for an update and that’s pretty normal check back in a little while and you’ll see that your name servers have changed over and once everything is done successfully you’ll see the screen check mark

With the message here great news cloudflare is now protecting your site that means you’ve successfully set up your ssl certificate on cloudflare but you still might have to wait a little while before you notice any changes on your website but that’s pretty normal but before we proceed

There are a few other steps that i want you to go through to finish setting up your cloudflare ssl we’re just going to go up here to ssl tls i’m going to click that here and we’re going to go down here into edge certificates if you scroll down you’ll see an option

That says always use https and we’re going to go ahead and turn this on and what this does is when anyone tries to access the http or the non-secure version of your website it will automatically force it and redirect it to https the secure version so we need to leave that on awesome

That’s all we need to do in cloudflare now there’s one more step that we need to do within our wordpress dashboard i’m going to go back to my website i’m going to log into my wordpress dashboard and we’re going to go on the bottom left

To plugins and we go up at the top to add new we’re going to search for a plugin called really simple ssl and what we’re using really simple ssl for is to help fix any url issues when it comes to the content on our website this is because in the database of our

Website urls for images and other content might still be http and not https and what really simple ssl does is redirect any sort of http requests to https and this helps fix any content related issues on the website due to https if you want to do this without a plugin

There are ways to do this properly where we change from http to https and if you’re interested in learning how to do this make sure you subscribe because i’ll be creating a video on this very soon and the one we want is the first one over here with the yellow padlock

We’re going to press install now and we’re also going to press activate once that’s done you’ll see the screen here that says almost ready to migrate to ssl and what you want to do is click on this big blue button here that says go ahead activate ssl

And that’s it that’s all it takes to activate your ssl your screen might look a little bit different here but that’s it all right now we’re going to go back to our website and check if our ssl certificate is active i’m going to go ahead and type in https

Yes bsf.com and there you have it headlock is there and our connection to the website is secure this indicates that the ssl certificate is working as it should one last thing i’ll check is when i type in http we want to check if that redirects automatically to the secure version of

The website https so here we go and that works as well you can see that when we typed in http it redirected automatically to https indicating that everything’s working just as it should and that’s it for today’s video if you want to check out more wordpress tutorials you can click on this playlist
